Joseph H. Pilates was an innovator, far ahead of his time in his approach to movement training. The movement regime that today bears his name is unique in its integration of the body, mind and spirit. Pilates based his approach on his knowledge of biomechanical principles of movement and anatomy.
His system of training the body involves progressions of exercises designed to train muscle systems, in co-ordination and counterbalanced against each other, in precise sequences. The movements engage and challenge both physical and mental skills. Each exercise is designed to educate, repattern and realign the body, and requires the experienced hand of an expert teacher to achieve lasting results.
The repertoire of Pilates exercises includes:
- Mat Work - is performed on a cushioned floor mat that challenges the body through a full range of motion, in all planes of movement. A progression of floor exercises build core stabilization while balancing strength and flexibility.
- Equipment Work - employs a full range of specially designed Pilates equipment, using resistance to strengthen muscle systems and improve joint alignment.
- Concentration
- Control
- Centering
- Precision
- Rhythm
- Breathing
“Physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind, fully capable of naturally, easily and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure.”- Joseph H. Pilates (1881-1967)
